  • EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION & REPROCESSING (EMDR)

    EMDR is a psychological method of processing information through the brain and the nervous system, in order to attain a state of good mental health and wellbeing.

    Some facts about information processing:

  • As we grow, we experience situations and give meaning to circumstances. We learn the lessons of life in a subjective way. Learning and integration takes place at a sub-conscious level, for example how we learn to ride a bike, or read a book.

  • A lesson learned is represented by a neural pathway in the brain, and it is reinforced with repetition, ensuring that this information is available to us for future use. We access this information unconsciously when we need it, and the lesson is played out in our lives.

  • Trauma or severe stress can upset the balance and information can become confused and distorted by emotional experiences held in the nervous system. A present day event could bring on the original memories and behaviour that were captured in the earlier event leading a person to feel severe anxiety or to become re-traumatised. Anything associated with the original event, for example, a loud noise, a particular colour or smell, a person or a song, could act as trigger to open the floodgates to emotions, memories and behaviour consistent with the original event.

  • If information is processed and stored in a distorted or negatively charged way, disturbing symptoms can manifest in a variety of ways, such as nightmares, vivid memories, behaviour, anger, sensations, beliefs or even pain.

    How does EMDR work?

    Using specific hand movements and eye co-ordination, traumatic memories are re-processed and stored in a way that is balanced and integrated in the body. EMDR releases stored negative emotions associated with a traumatic event and brings about a positive empowering state with a new understanding, spontaneously leading to more appropriate feelings and behaviour. This leads to psychological self-healing.

    A domino effect often occurs so that more events linked by similarity can also be reprocessed and integrated during the session.

    Content Free - there is no need to discuss the details of a trauma

    Sometimes a particular incident is blocked from conscious memory and access to the information is restricted. EMDR can work content free and still be effective. Equally, the therapist can work content free if the client does not wish to discuss the details of the event. The client is always in control and can stop the process at any time if necessary.
